It was in Italy, more precisely in the region of Genoa, that we spent part of our summer vacation. We laughed a lot with our friends before leaving because we told them that we had rented an apartment in Genoa. Of course, the city of Genoa is a thousand times less colourful than the neighbouring towns, so they thought it was a funny idea to stay in Genoa for the holidays. Nevertheless, the old historic centre of this city remains to be seen and visited.
Life is good in Rapallo
Of course, it was in Rapallo, slightly further south, that we stayed. Rapallo is quite a noisy city because there are a great deal of scooters and Vespas, but the Italians, although highly-strung when behind the wheel, always let pedestrians who want to cross past. The city is clean and Italians often take their dogs out. This region is quite rich and there is also a pretty big contrast between the North and the South of the country.
We arrived on a Saturday night, rather tired after the trip and surprised to see all the crowds out partying, but we got used to it very quickly. We passed an outdoor mass because the church was very close to our accommodation, which was also noisy, but that’s all part of the experience and the streets along the sea were packed.
Pasta in all sauces
We tried out the restaurants and ate all sorts of delicious pasta. My favourite dish was the seafood risotto. The pizzas were also great, the cheapest of which cost just €4. Restaurants are cheaper there than in France, as are the grocery stores such as Gulliver for example. However, gasoline is overpriced.
The Riviera of the Levant
We opted for tours on the Riviera of the Levant. The best towns to visit are Sainte-Marguerite, which is very pleasant but with a pebble beach. The region is rocky and mountainous, so for sandy beaches you have to go to Sestri Levante.
Portofino is the small Italian Saint-Tropez with luxury boutiques such as Cartier. Perfect if you like fuchsia phone cases set with diamonds! We visited the town and took in the view and even watched a Russian depart with his brand new black yacht.
The Cinque Terre
The must-see is the Cinque Terre region in Liguria. We visited the first 3 villages. Everything is very steep, so it is best to give yourself 2 or 3 days to visit everything. There are many tourists and the coves are not easy to reach but are well worth the detour. The water is warm and clear. The vegetable and seafood fritters are delicious for lunch.
Spend your holidays in Italy
You will probably have understood, we love Italy and we hope to encourage you to spend your next vacation in Italy.
